I'm so glad I found...

...Editors @ Brixton Academy 31/05/06

Twas just over a year ago that Fringey first saw Editors playing their little hearts out at The Garage in Islington* and now here we are at the second of their 3 sold out nights at the Academy of Brixton - oh we're so proud!

Now there's a big part of me that hates the idea of the mainstream getting their hands on bands that we really love because it means that people whom we most definitely do not love start coming to their gigs (just look what happened when we saw them at The Astoria). It makes you pine for the days when the badges were free, the tickets were under a tenner and Edith Bowman had to watch round the front like the rest of us.

But of course you want your beloved bands to be successful too so that they can keep making music for your ears. Sadly you can't have it both ways. What you can have though is hope that as the band get bigger and bigger their egos don't follow suit. And thank chr*sty that, so far, Editors seem to have avoided disappearing up their own Back Rooms.

When lead singer, Tom Smith, tells the crowd that so many people wanting to see them live 'means everything' to the band, you believe him. But I suspect that maybe the whole '3 nights at Brixton' thing was blowing their minds slightly because whilst they put in a performance that gave us goose bumps and had Fringey dancing about like good 'uns they did seem a little overwhelmed and never truly let themselves go. It was as if they were expecting the venue to announce that there'd been a terrible mistake and everyone was actually there to see The Artic Monkeys. But we're not, we're here to see Editors because whether we found their jaggedy, filmic phonics before they got big or after we're all just so glad we did.

*Actually I only saw about half their set at the Garage gig as I had a bit of a funny turn as they came on and had to go have a bit of a sit down in the front bar where the very nice bouncers made me better by getting me to drink iced water and sit with my head between my knees (not at the same time, obviously that would be silly).
